Hiring
The Georgia Department of Community Supervision, the state agency that supervises people on probation and parole, put 21 Community Supervision Officer 1 openings on the Team Georgia Careers job board on Friday, Nov. 6, each advertising a starting salary of $55,082.98. Six of the postings are for offices in metro Atlanta: Atlanta in Fulton County, Lawrenceville in the Gwinnett Circuit, Cumming in Forsyth County, Morrow in the Clayton Circuit, and two that cover Decatur and Conyers in DeKalb and Rockdale counties.
The rest are spread across the state, from Albany, Augusta and Savannah to Rome, Dahlonega, Gainesville, Milledgeville, Dublin, Waycross, Cairo, Thomson, Cedartown and two in Americus. The board showed 33 open postings for the department when it was checked at about 17:40 UTC on Nov. 6. Each posting is an advertised opening, not a hire.
What the job involves
The posting for the Atlanta office (requisition JR0000007555) describes a sworn role. Officers wear a uniform and badge and carry a firearm issued by the department. They manage a caseload: building case plans, conducting surveillance in the community, enforcing probation and parole conditions, investigating violations and referring people to community resources.
The paperwork side includes background checks, DNA and drug testing, fingerprinting and photographing new cases, writing case notes and reports, and computing sentences and early terminations. Officers screen for substance use and mental health needs, work with counselors and treatment providers, testify in court and at parole revocation hearings, and conduct arrests and searches in the office and in the field.
The department says it uses technology to offer a flexible schedule and a hybrid mix of virtual and in-office work.
Requirements
The minimum is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants must be at least 21, hold a valid driver’s license and meet Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council requirements for peace officers, since people in the job are considered peace officers under state law. New hires must complete POST-required Basic Community Supervision Officer Training, which includes firearm, Taser and OC spray qualification, pass a medical clearance and finish a field training officer program.
Preference goes to applicants with two or more of the following: a degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology, social work, public administration or a related field; internship, practicum or volunteer experience in probation, parole, corrections, law enforcement or social services; knowledge of evidence-based supervision and case management; experience writing reports or legal documents; a year of work with diverse populations; or experience conducting interviews, intakes or assessments.
Pay and benefits
All 21 officer postings list the same $55,082.98 starting salary. The Atlanta posting lists 13 paid holidays, compensatory time, membership in the Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund, a 401(k) match of up to 9%, medical, dental and vision coverage and eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. A wellness program allows up to three hours a week for physical fitness, and uniforms and equipment are provided.
A part-time lab job in Douglasville
The department also posted a part-time Laboratory Tech 1 role in Douglasville (JR0000007608) on Nov. 6 at $21.37 an hour for up to 29 hours a week. The technician analyzes urine specimens for drugs and alcohol for people under supervision who are enrolled in substance-use programming at the department’s Day Reporting Centers, logs results into case management systems and keeps the analyzer calibrated. The minimum requirement is a high school diploma or GED, and the person hired must complete lab certification training and be able to testify about it in court, including at revocation hearings.
Deadlines
Workday data for the Nov. 6 postings show an end date of Saturday, Nov. 14. Each posting also says it may close earlier, once a suitable candidate or candidate pool has been selected. Earlier officer postings dated Oct. 30, including two in Conyers, two in Lawrenceville, one in Decatur and one in Monroe, show an end date of Saturday, Nov. 7. Applications go through the Team Georgia Careers site.
