U.S. employers reported about 7.08 million job openings on the last business day of August, down from a revised 7.34 million in July, while hires, quits and layoffs changed little, according to the BLS JOLTS release of September 29.
A McKinsey Global Institute model published September 29 estimates that about 11 million U.S. workers may need to move out of declining occupations by 2035. The figure is a modeled base case, not a forecast of layoffs.
July's 7.3 million job openings are a month-end snapshot, not completed hires. Read with hires, quits, layoffs, pay and local data, they point to steady demand but slower movement between jobs.
