The Upside: Atlanta Hospitality Offers Real Career Paths, from Airport Counters to Hotel Kitchens

Research & Data

Hospitality is often described as a field of entry-level jobs. A close read of four Atlanta employers’ own career pages suggests something more encouraging: it is a field of ladders. At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and at three metro hotels, the openings listed as of Friday, Nov. 6, run from first jobs that ask for little or no experience to supervisor, chef and finance roles, often with the pay printed right on the posting.

When an employer posts the next rung beside the first, a worker can see what experience it takes to climb.

At the airport: counter, warehouse, management

HMSHost, the airport restaurant operator that is part of Avolta, lists six openings at Hartsfield-Jackson. The most accessible is a Crew Member job at the Chick-fil-A at Concourse C, Gate C21, starting at $16.65 an hour. Customer service and cash-handling experience is preferred, not required. A Warehouse Clerk opening pays $19.65 an hour and asks for zero to one year of warehousing experience and the ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

The next rungs are posted too. A Shift Manager I job at Atlanta Bread Company in the Concourse F atrium lists $19.05 to $23.29 an hour and requires two years of food-service, cash-handling and customer-service experience plus six months as a supervisor or lead. A Shift Manager II role at Ecco, also on Concourse F, pays $20.20 to $24.68 and asks for four years of experience, two of them supervising. Further up, a Commissary Manager III, who runs purchasing and food production for the airport operation, lists $65,509 to $78,033 a year, and an Operations Performance Controller in finance lists $120,900 to $146,500. HMSHost’s postings list health coverage, paid time off, meal and transportation benefits and tuition reimbursement, noting that benefits vary by position.

In the hotels: housekeeping to the executive kitchen

At the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria, a 400-room hotel at 200 Interstate North Parkway SE managed by Concord Hospitality, the kitchen ladder is unusually clear. Line cooks with one year of full-service experience are offered $18 to $21 an hour; a PM lead cook with three years, $21 to $24; a sous chef, $23.70 to $29.63. A room care attendant posting lists $15.50 an hour on a daytime schedule and asks for six months of full-service hotel housekeeping. An event manager, who coordinates meetings and conferences, is listed at $26.07 to $32.59 an hour; the posting calls a Certified Meeting Professional designation a strong plus, not a requirement.

Downtown, Origin Hotel Atlanta, a 121-room Wyndham hotel at 166 Pryor Street SW managed by Tandem Hospitality Group, lists a dishwasher, two room attendant jobs, a public area attendant, a bartender/server and a front office supervisor. Several entry roles accept a high school diploma or a few months of related experience; the supervisor job requires prior supervisory experience. Origin does not post pay.

In Duluth, the Westin Atlanta Gwinnett at 6450 Sugarloaf Parkway lists nine openings, including a bellperson, a server, a Starbucks shift supervisor, a maintenance technician, a restaurant supervisor at $20 to $22 an hour, a catering sales manager at $65,000 to $70,000 and an executive sous chef at $80,000 to $85,000. Two of its listings, the server and maintenance technician jobs, carry a Nov. 6 posting date.

The Catch

These are recruiting listings, not hires, and any of them can close or change; one Galleria management posting was set to expire Nov. 6. Most of the 30 listings carry posting dates between Oct. 7 and Nov. 4, and the date printed atop each property’s job flyer appears to be the day the page was generated, not when the jobs opened. Pay is posted for only some roles, and the hotel postings extend their benefit packages to full-time associates. Many hotel jobs require weekend, holiday, overnight or early-morning availability, and several Galleria postings say applications without a resume will not move forward. The airport postings do not spell out access-badge or background-check steps, and HMSHost describes itself as a drug-free workplace, so applicants should ask the recruiter what clearance a role needs.

Still, the pattern is the useful part: a crew member, line cook or room care attendant can see, on the same employer’s page, what a shift lead, supervisor or sous chef earns and what experience gets them there. The best next step is to pick one rung, read the full posting and apply through the employer’s own career site.
