Hiring
The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta added 22 job postings to its careers site between Monday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 5, and the newest batch leans heavily toward the people who staff its after-school, camp and youth sports programs.
Ten of the postings went up on Thursday, Nov. 5, according to the posting dates on the YMCA’s own Workday job board, checked at about 02:30 UTC on Friday, Nov. 6 (Thursday evening in Atlanta). Three more were posted Wednesday, Nov. 4, and nine on Monday, Nov. 2. At that check the board listed 310 open postings in all, so the week’s additions are a slice of a much larger standing list. Each posting is a recruiting notice, not a count of people being hired.
An after-school driver at East Lake
The posting that drew attention on outside job sites is a part-time Bus Driver Afterschool position (requisition R0012972), posted Nov. 5 and based at the East Lake YMCA Teen Center in Atlanta. The driver reports to the after-school director and moves children between program sites.
The schedule is the narrow window that after-school work usually demands: the posting says applicants must be available between 2 and 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and must have their own transportation to reach the assigned location. Drivers must be at least 21, pass a criminal background check, drug screening and a driving-record check, complete the YMCA’s defensive driving course and get CPR certification within 30 days of hire. The posting asks for knowledge of the rules for commercial passenger vehicles, but it does not state that a commercial driver’s license is required. The YMCA lists separate “Bus Driver – CDL” and “Bus Driver Non-CDL” requisitions; those were posted more than 30 days ago.
The driver is also expected to take attendance at the start of the program and at each transition, keep incident paperwork and follow Georgia’s Bright From the Start child-care licensing rules.
Camp, sports and early-learning roles
Three Nov. 5 postings are for camp staff at the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA in Buckhead: a camp counselor, a lead camp counselor and a day camp site lead, all part time. Counselors must be at least 18, have experience working with children in a structured setting and hold or obtain First Aid and CPR certification. The site lead helps the youth development director run daily camp operations, including staff supervision, rosters, behavior management and parent communication. A fourth camp counselor posting, at the Forsyth County Family YMCA in Cumming, went up Nov. 2.
Sports monitor jobs were posted Nov. 5 at the East Lake Family YMCA and the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta YMCA; the East Lake posting sets a minimum age of 16, which makes it one of the few openings in the batch available to high school students. Alpharetta also posted a full-time youth development director on Nov. 5 and a full-time afterschool director on Nov. 2.
On the early-learning side, a full-time Instructional Support Coach posted Nov. 4 at the Arthur M. Blank Family Youth YMCA Early Learning Center requires a bachelor’s degree in reading, early childhood education, special education or a related field, at least one year of pre-K teaching and a valid Georgia provisional teaching certificate with documented reading coursework.
The rest of the week’s postings are spread across fitness and member services: group exercise instructors in Alpharetta and at The Villages at Carver Family YMCA, two wellness coach jobs at the J.M. Tull Gwinnett Family YMCA in Lawrenceville, a wellness director in Cumming, a walking club instructor at the McCleskey East Cobb YMCA in Marietta, a membership service representative in Stone Mountain and a playcenter attendant in Brookhaven. Office roles include a membership systems administrator, an employee-relations human resources manager and a branch executive director. One full-time registrar job is at YMCA Camp High Harbour at Lake Burton, near Clayton in north Georgia, outside the metro area.
What applicants should know
None of the postings reviewed lists a pay rate, so applicants will need to ask about wages during the hiring process. The YMCA’s postings say candidates must pass a background check, drug screening and reference check, and driving roles add a motor vehicle record check. Most of the youth-facing jobs are part time, and applications are submitted through the YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s Workday careers site.
