Hiring
Georgia Power is recruiting a Power System Coordinator for its Transmission Control Center in Lithia Springs, a shift job that directs real-time switching on the state’s transmission grid and starts with five weeks of formal training for an industry reliability certification. It is one of seven metro Atlanta postings that Southern Company and its subsidiaries put up on Friday, Nov. 6.
The figures come from Southern Company’s Oracle careers site, checked at 17:33 UTC (12:33 p.m. ET) on Friday. The site listed 112 open postings across the company’s territory. Ten carried a Nov. 6 posting date: six in Atlanta, one in Lithia Springs, and three outside the metro area, in Athens, Ga., and Birmingham, Ala. A posting is an opening the company is advertising, not a hire, and none of the seven metro postings lists pay.
All seven went up after the company’s postings from Nov. 2 through Nov. 5, which covered fleet mechanics, line inspectors and plant security, were tallied early Friday. Each of Friday’s postings shows a closing date.
Running the grid in Lithia Springs
The Power System Coordinator (requisition 22521) directs real-time operations for an assigned area of the Georgia Integrated Transmission System. The work includes daily switching to set up safe clearances for construction and maintenance crews, watching alarms for overloads and outages, keeping voltages within limits, and isolating faults to restore service. Coordinators also direct field employees through switching during routine work and emergencies.
The control center runs around the clock, every day of the year. The posting calls for rotating 12-hour shifts covering days, nights, holidays and weekends, plus call-outs during emergencies and severe weather.
The five-week course prepares new hires for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s Transmission Operator certification, which the posting says is a condition of continued employment. That is followed by a structured six-month program of classroom work, computer simulation and on-the-job training with experienced operators, with evening and weekend study required.
A degree is not required. Engineering or power-systems coursework, utility experience in generation, transmission or substations, and control-room or rotating-shift experience are listed as pluses. Candidates selected to interview must pass the Edison Electric Institute’s System Operator/Power Dispatcher II test, and finalists face enhanced screening that includes a background check, drug screen and psychological assessment. Hires must live within commuting distance of Lithia Springs or relocate; the posting says relocation help will be considered. The listing’s closing date is Nov. 22, Eastern time.
Estimating new service in Atlanta
A Field Estimator (OH) posting (22622) is the other hands-on technical job in Friday’s batch. The estimator does field investigations, drawings, estimates and paperwork for overhead and underground service, works with developers, builders, inspectors and contractors, and designs and estimates single-family residential projects. The job includes an on-call rotation and out-of-town storm duty.
A high school diploma is preferred, and the company’s TECH test is required; applicants who meet the other qualifications and have not passed it will be invited to take it. Three or more years in a power utility or as an electrician is preferred, and a valid driver’s license is required. This posting closes soonest, on Nov. 13, Eastern time.
Office, planning and AI roles
The other five are professional jobs in Atlanta, with closing dates of Nov. 20 or Nov. 22. A Distributed Generation Renewable Project Manager (22591), part of Southern Company Services, manages solar developers’ projects through a request-for-proposals process, from interconnection to power purchase agreements. It is based at Georgia Power headquarters and requires four days a week in the office, plus up to 25% travel. A four-year degree or direct project-coordination experience qualifies.
Two Georgia Power project coordinator postings went up Friday afternoon. One (22548) maintains the software roadmap for distributed energy resources and runs vendor pilots. The other (22630) handles pole-attachment requests, pole replacements and removals with communications companies, electric membership corporations, city electric systems and governments. The second lists five years of utility distribution experience as preferred and requires experience with the JETS, DistView, Pole Foreman and NJUNS systems.
A Business Engagement Manager (22638) will bring data, analytics and AI tools into Georgia Power’s customer-experience operations and requires a bachelor’s degree and at least six years of experience. A Southern Company executive compensation consultant (22494) asks for five or more years of experience, including three in executive pay.
Applications go through each posting on the Southern Company careers site.
