Skills & Careers
Luster National, which provides construction, engineering and inspection services on transportation projects, posted an opening on Thursday, Nov. 5, for Technology Construction Inspectors to work on traffic-signal, highway camera, connected-vehicle and electric-vehicle charging projects across Georgia, with a posted salary range of $72,000 to $114,000 a year, or $35 to $55 an hour.
The listing, requisition 11099 on the company’s Greenhouse job board, went up at 5:40 p.m. ET on Nov. 5 and is filed under the firm’s Atlanta office. The work itself is statewide: the posting describes long-term, full-time, on-site positions “at various project sites throughout Georgia,” with statewide travel, on-call duty that requires reaching a site within two hours for emergency work, and possible night and weekend inspections.
The posting uses the plural and says it covers “various skill levels,” with the level set by each finalist’s background. It does not say how many inspectors Luster will hire, and a job posting is recruiting activity, not a hire.
What the inspectors check
The job falls under what the industry calls CEI work: construction, engineering and inspection. According to the listing, a Technology Construction Inspector checks trenching and boring, conduit, pull boxes, foundations, poles, cabinets and device installations. Inspectors review intelligent transportation systems, traffic signals, ramp meters, managed lanes and connected-vehicle equipment, including CCTV cameras, dynamic message signs, vehicle detection, signal controllers and roadside units.
The technical core is fiber and power. Inspectors oversee fiber-optic installation, splicing and terminations, and perform or verify OTDR and optical loss testing; they verify power service, grounding and bonding, and surge protection against the National Electrical Code. They may also inspect EV charging site work and charger commissioning, witness factory and site acceptance testing, and confirm that installed devices talk to the network before the state accepts them. Paperwork is a large share of the job: daily inspection reports with photos, field measurements of pay items and nonconformance logs.
Requirements and the six-month window
The minimum qualifications, written for an Inspector II-level hire, start with a high school diploma or GED and a Georgia-valid driver’s license. Applicants need three or more years of progressive transportation technician experience with a state highway agency or as a consultant, or an equivalent mix of training and experience, plus working knowledge of ITS, signal, fiber or electrical construction and the ability to read plans and specifications. Geometry and trigonometry are listed.
Required credentials include GDOT’s WECS certification, GSWCC Level 1A erosion control, GDOT field concrete technician certification and passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training test groups 1 and 2. For GDOT certifications and test scores, the posting says they “must be obtained within six (6) months of beginning work on the GDOT project,” and Luster says it provides training materials. Preferred credentials, which the firm ties to a senior-level hire, include IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II or III, fiber splicing and OTDR certifications, OSHA electrical safety training, NFPA 70E and a Georgia electrical contractor license.
Listed benefits include unlimited flexible time off, a 401(k) with a guaranteed employer contribution, health coverage and $2,500 a year toward professional development. Offers may be subject to a background check and drug test.
Other Luster openings in Georgia
The Nov. 5 posting is the only new Georgia listing on Luster’s board this week; eight other Georgia jobs on the board were posted in September and October. Those include a CEI Inspector II posted Oct. 30 at $52,000 to $73,000 and a Senior CEI Inspector posted Oct. 30 at $72,000 to $85,000, whose initial worksite is a 16-mile stretch of SR 400 from the North Springs MARTA station in Fulton County to just north of McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County. A CEI Inspector Aid/Inspector I listing posted Oct. 16, at $35,000 to $62,000, says it is for future roles and builds a talent pool rather than filling a current opening.
Among Luster’s posted Georgia inspector ranges, the technology inspector job has the highest ceiling. The firm says it may pay above or below a posted range depending on the level offered and a finalist’s experience, certifications and other factors. Listings can change or close at any time.
