Georgia Attorney General’s Office Posts Three Atlanta Prosecutor and Litigator Jobs, With Floors of $72,000 and $75,000

Employers

The Georgia Department of Law, the office of the state attorney general, posted three Assistant Attorney General jobs in Atlanta on the Team Georgia Careers board on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and Thursday, Nov. 5. One defends the state’s public safety agencies in court, one handles Medicaid fraud cases and one defends murder convictions on appeal. Two of the postings give a salary floor, $75,000 and $72,000, and say pay above that depends on experience. The third says only that salary is commensurate with experience.

All three require a law degree from an accredited school and membership in the State Bar of Georgia. The postings were checked at about 17:40 UTC on Friday, Nov. 6, when the board listed 22 open Department of Law postings. None of the three lists a closing date. Each is an advertised opening, not a hire.

Public Safety section: minimum $75,000

The Criminal Justice Division’s Public Safety section posting (JR0000005016, dated Nov. 5) is for a lawyer who represents agencies including the Department of Corrections, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the State Board of Pardons and Paroles and the Department of Juvenile Justice. Lawyers in the section appear in state and federal court on mandamus, declaratory judgment and injunction cases, and also handle administrative cases before the Office of State Administrative Hearings. The posting describes the work as a mix of state and federal trial and appellate practice.

Duties include trying cases and arguing motions and appeals, drafting pleadings and briefs, taking depositions, working with expert witnesses, negotiating settlements, handling discovery, and drafting memos of advice and formal opinions. The lawyer also answers questions from citizens, legislators and judges. The office prefers candidates who have drafted and argued dispositive motions, written appellate briefs, handled federal civil rights cases, or litigated under the Administrative Procedure Act. The posting says the job usually involves little travel.

Medicaid Fraud Division: minimum $72,000

The Medicaid Fraud Division posting (JR0000007590, dated Nov. 4) is for a civil litigator who represents the state in investigations and lawsuits under the Georgia False Medicaid Claims Act. The posting says the division has statewide jurisdiction to recover civil remedies when providers defraud Medicaid, and that much of the litigation involves whistleblower lawsuits filed in federal court. The lawyer joins a multidisciplinary investigative team and works on joint federal-state investigations with state and federal law enforcement. Civil litigation experience, especially in healthcare or fraud matters, is preferred. Some travel is expected.

Post-Conviction Litigation: salary by experience

The Post-Conviction posting (JR0000007600, dated Nov. 4) is in the Criminal Justice Division. Lawyers in the section write the state’s briefs in murder appeals before the Supreme Court of Georgia when the sentence is life or life without parole. They also defend state and federal habeas corpus cases, which can involve sentences from life without parole down to misdemeanors. The work includes evidentiary hearings, arguing motions and drafting final orders in state habeas cases. The posting says many hearings are held virtually, so travel is limited. Strong writing and research skills and appellate experience are preferred, and the bar membership must be in good standing.

How to apply

Outside applicants must attach a resume, a cover letter, the Department of Law employment application form, two writing samples, and undergraduate and law school transcripts (unofficial copies are accepted at the application stage), and answer the prescreening questions. The postings warn that, because of application volume, the office cannot give status updates by phone or email and will contact only the candidates it picks for interviews. Finalists face a state tax records check and a criminal background investigation.
