Fulton County Schools Sets Virtual Teacher Open Houses for Nov. 3 and Nov. 10, With 21 Teaching Jobs Posted

Hiring

Fulton County Schools is holding two online open houses for prospective teachers this month, one on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for schools in Sandy Springs and Roswell and one on Tuesday, Nov. 10, for schools in Alpharetta, Milton and Johns Creek. Both run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Eastern time, according to the district’s event registrations, and the district asks candidates to apply before they attend.

The sessions are hosted on the Premier Virtual online career fair platform and are labeled by the district as its Central Virtual Open House (Sandy Springs and Roswell) and North Virtual Open House (Alpharetta, Milton and Johns Creek). The district’s careers site lists both events alongside two South open houses for South Fulton, Fairburn, Union City and Palmetto, and for East Point, College Park and Hapeville; the platform’s records show those were held on Oct. 20 and Oct. 27.

How to take part

Registration is through links on the district’s Events page at jobs.fultonschools.org. According to the platform’s event settings, registrations for both remaining sessions do not require approval. The registration form asks whether a candidate holds or expects to hold a Georgia or out-of-state teaching certificate, what subjects they are certified to teach, and whether they have already applied on the district’s career site.

That last question reflects the district’s request on its Events page: “Please be sure to apply before attending the virtual and in-person events.” Applications start with a candidate profile on the same site; the district says external applicants do not need to pick a specific position to begin.

Openings posted now

A snapshot of the district’s Teach job category, taken at about 13:30 UTC on Monday, Nov. 2, showed 21 postings, which the district says are for immediate hire in the current school year. Those are vacancy listings, not a measure of how many teachers the district will hire.

They range across grade levels and subjects: elementary positions such as 5th grade and 3rd grade teachers, a self-contained autism teacher, middle school science, math and health and physical education teachers, and high school English, history, Spanish, ESOL, engineering technology and math teachers. Schools named include Centennial High, Riverwood High, River Trail Middle, Northwestern Middle, Westlake High and Tri-Cities High. The list also includes an assistant Army JROTC instructor and a part-time work-based learning coordinator. Candidates interested in the next school year are pointed to separate teaching candidate pools.

A sample posting, for a history teacher at Riverwood High, requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university and a valid Georgia teaching certificate in the field or eligibility to hold one, and asks for zero to one year of classroom experience. The postings opened did not list salaries.

Routes in without a certificate

The district’s Pathways to Become a Teacher page sets minimum eligibility for teaching applicants: a bachelor’s degree; a passing score on the GACE content assessment for the subject, or a degree in a relevant grades 6-12 subject; and either a pass on the Georgia Professional Standards Commission’s Educator Ethics assessment (GACE test code 351) or a GaPSC certificate.

Beyond the traditional route for education graduates and certified teachers, the district describes two alternatives. Career changers without certification who meet those requirements must enroll, within three years of being hired, in a GaPSC-approved university program leading to a clear renewable certificate in the subject they were hired to teach. A second track, for candidates with degrees in science, technology, engineering and math, other advanced math and science fields, or specialized fields including world languages and fine arts, allows them to teach without seeking certification. To stay employed on that track, they must complete Fulton’s year-long Empowering Teachers induction program, show progressively positive evaluations and meet annual professional development targets. The district says teachers can later switch to the certification route.

What to upload depends on status. The Teach page asks Georgia-certified teachers to include their certificate number, out-of-state teachers to upload their certificate and apply to GaPSC as soon as possible, and non-certified applicants to upload all transcripts and test scores so the district can determine the best alternative pathway.
