Hiring
MARTA opened applications on Thursday, Oct. 29, for several front-line and supervisory jobs, including Mobility operators who drive its paratransit vans at a posted $19.70 an hour and transit police officers with a posted range of $29.33 to $41.72 an hour. The police posting is set to close at midnight Eastern time as Nov. 15 begins, making Nov. 14 the last full day to apply.
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s Oracle careers portal listed 14 openings when checked at 13:45 UTC on Monday, Nov. 2. Six of them were posted Oct. 29 or Oct. 30. Each is a posting, not a count of hires. Several say MARTA is seeking “multiple” or “several” people.
Mobility Operator: $19.70 an hour
Mobility operators drive MARTA’s specially equipped vans for riders who qualify for its paratransit service under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The work is curb-to-curb: picking up passengers at set locations, collecting fares, operating wheelchair lifts and helping riders board and secure themselves. Routes can change daily, and drivers find addresses using dispatch-provided map coordinates.
The full-time posting (requisition 1540) lists a pay rate of $19.70 and is classified as represented, meaning union-covered. Applicants need a high school diploma or equivalent, two years of driving experience and a valid Georgia Class C license, and must be at least 21. Six months of driving vans or larger vehicles in heavy traffic and knowledge of the ADA’s paratransit rules are preferred. Driving records may show no more than one moving violation and three points in 24 months, and no DUI in the past five years. Operators must meet the U.S. Department of Transportation’s physical qualification standards for drivers. The posting runs through Dec. 31.
Bus operators: $21.22, and a CDL is not required to apply
MARTA’s full-time and part-time bus operator postings (1374 and 1375) have been open since May 4 and also run through Dec. 31. Each lists $21.22. Applicants without a commercial license can apply with a Georgia Class C license carrying no more than three points. They must get a commercial learner’s permit with a passenger endorsement within two weeks of starting, with training provided. Hires who start with a learner’s permit must earn a Class A or B CDL with a passenger endorsement within the three weeks of the candidate training program. Applicants must be 21 and have a high school diploma or equivalent, and a year of customer-service or commercial driving experience is preferred.
Transit police officer: apply through Nov. 14
The transit police posting (1545) requires a high school diploma or equivalent, U.S. citizenship, a valid driver’s license and a minimum age of 21. Starting pay depends on education: high school graduates start at Step 1, applicants with two years of college or an associate degree at Step 2, and those with a bachelor’s degree at Step 3, within the $29.33-to-$41.72 range. Applicants must pass a background investigation that includes a criminal history check, a computer voice stress test and a credit check, along with a physical exam, drug screening and psychological testing. New officers without Georgia POST certification begin their six-month probation after completing the POST training course.
Bus maintenance supervisors: apply through Nov. 4
Two maintenance leadership postings close at midnight as Nov. 5 begins. A bus maintenance supervisor (1427), with a posted range of $51,516 to $77,274, requires an associate degree in mechanics or a related field and four years of experience repairing diesel- or natural gas-powered heavy equipment. Directly related experience can substitute for the degree. A bus maintenance garage superintendent (1385), at $65,641 to $98,462, requires a bachelor’s degree and six years of supervisory experience in heavy-equipment maintenance, or equivalent experience in place of the degree. MARTA says the superintendent posting will also build an eligibility list for vacancies over the next six months.
Applicants create an account on MARTA’s careers portal, linked from itsmarta.com, and apply to each requisition there. MARTA’s careers page lists no upcoming career fairs. All of these positions are safety-sensitive and fall under the agency’s drug and alcohol program.
