Amazon has made another round of corporate job cuts. The company confirmed on Oct. 7 that it had eliminated what it described as a small number of roles, mostly within its Stores organization, the unit that runs its core e-commerce business.
Reuters, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees were let go, with workers in the United States, India and the United Kingdom among those affected. Amazon has not confirmed a headcount. In an emailed statement to Reuters, an Amazon spokesperson said the company had adjusted parts of the Stores business because it believes the new structure will help it deliver on its priorities.
Internal posts that affected employees shared with Reuters pointed to several Stores teams being involved, including customer service and selling-partner services, with other units possibly affected as well.
The round is far smaller than the roughly 30,000 corporate job cuts Amazon made in a cycle that began last year and ran into January, but it extends a string of smaller reductions since then. It also comes as the company keeps expanding spending on data centers for cloud computing and artificial intelligence, including a planned Louisiana investment it raised to $18 billion in August.
For the labor market, that combination matters more than the absolute size of this round. When an employer trims selected functions while still investing heavily in others, a single company-level hiring signal says little unless it is broken down by occupation and business unit.
Amazon has not published a headcount or a geographic or role-by-role breakdown for the latest cuts. The reductions therefore should not be treated as a uniform pullback across the company’s workforce.
