Azenta plans to reduce its workforce and close three of its Multiomics laboratory sites in North America as part of a restructuring of that business.
In a Form 8-K filed with the SEC on Oct. 7, the life-sciences company said its board approved the plan on Oct. 5 and that it began notifying affected employees on Oct. 6. The filing does not say how many positions will be eliminated or identify the three sites.
Azenta said the plan is mainly intended to consolidate its North American laboratory network, simplify its organizational structure and improve operating efficiency. The company estimates pre-tax charges of about $11 million to $13 million, made up primarily of roughly $9 million in asset impairment charges and about $3 million in employee severance and other restructuring costs. The impairment relates mostly to lease right-of-use assets and leasehold improvements at leased facilities Azenta expects to vacate before their leases run out. The company expects about $7 million of the total to be paid in cash.
Azenta expects to substantially complete the restructuring by March 31, 2027, subject to legal and employee notice and consultation requirements, and to record substantially all of the charges in its fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2027. It estimates the plan will produce about $11 million in annualized cost savings once fully implemented, and said it may identify additional actions as the work proceeds.
The new plan comes on top of earlier restructuring actions during fiscal 2026: one in the company’s Sample Management Solutions segment in August and another in its Multiomics segment in September. Azenta said those earlier rounds did not produce material charges.
For workers, the filing leaves two important details unresolved: which three lab locations will close and how many positions will be affected. Those disclosures will determine the local labor-market impact. The current filing establishes that the cuts are part of a broader physical consolidation of the lab network, not only a reduction in corporate overhead.
