Georgia Juvenile Justice Department Posts 10 New Openings, From Youth Detention Lieutenants to $30-an-Hour Treatment Specialist

Hiring

Georgia’s Department of Juvenile Justice put 10 openings on the state’s Team Georgia Careers job board on Monday, Nov. 2, and Tuesday, Nov. 3. Most of them close within a week. The postings cover supervisors in youth detention facilities, community probation officers, a school resource officer and kitchen supervisors, at sites from Rome to Savannah and from metro Atlanta to Warner Robins. As of 13:26 UTC on Wednesday, Nov. 4, every posting was live on the state’s Workday careers site with its pay and closing date.

Supervisors for youth detention centers

The best-paid new security roles are supervisory jobs at regional youth detention centers (RYDCs). A Juvenile Correctional Lieutenant posting for the Savannah RYDC (JR0000007523) lists $60,991 a year and closes Nov. 7. The posting adds a military pay incentive of 2.5% for one year of active-duty service, rising to 10% for four or more years. A lieutenant posting for the Wilkes RYDC in Washington, Ga. (JR0000004895) lists $55,447 and closes Nov. 9.

Both lieutenant postings require a high school diploma or GED plus one year as a juvenile correctional sergeant or equivalent. They also list two years of military service at E-5 or higher as an alternative. New hires must earn and keep Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification within six months. A captain’s job at the Aaron Cohn RYDC in Columbus (JR0000007041) pays $58,892 on day shift and closes Nov. 10. It asks for two years of supervisory law-enforcement experience, a year as a juvenile correctional lieutenant, or three years of military service at E-6 or higher.

At the Augusta Youth Development Campus, a School Resource Officer posting (JR0000002303) lists $58,488. No end date is shown. Applicants must already be P.O.S.T.-certified peace officers in good standing and must submit their P.O.S.T. profile with the application. The officer would handle security for students entering the secure education area and run safety drills required by the Georgia Preparatory Academy.

Community probation and office roles

In community services, DJJ is hiring Juvenile Probation Parole Specialist II officers for its Houston County office in Warner Robins (JR0000004864), which pays $43,050, and its Newton County office in Covington (JR0000007525), which shows no salary. Both close Nov. 9. The duties include home, school and work visits, curfew checks, drug screens and court testimony. Candidates need an associate degree and two years of human-services experience, or one of the alternative experience paths the postings list. They must also get P.O.S.T. certification within six months and may have to pass a physical agility assessment.

A District AOC posting at the DeKalb community services office in Tucker (JR0000000101) pays $43,888.67 for administrative and data-analysis work and closes Nov. 9. The posting is inconsistent on education: one qualifications section asks for an associate degree, while another asks for a bachelor’s degree. Applicants should expect the stricter standard to apply.

Treatment and kitchen jobs

At the Atlanta Youth Development Campus in College Park, a part-time Sex Offender Specialist posting (JR0000007442) pays $30 an hour and closes Nov. 8. The specialist would run assessments and individual and group treatment for youth with sexually harmful behavior. The minimum is a bachelor’s degree and four years of related experience. A master’s degree in a counseling field and eligibility for Georgia licensure are preferred.

Food Service Supervisor openings at the Bob Richards RYDC in Rome (JR0000006918, $33,000, closes Nov. 11) and the Augusta YDC (JR0000007151, $32,552, closes Nov. 10) require ServSafe Manager certification. They also require a diploma or GED and two years of food-service experience, including a year as a lead worker or supervisor.

How to apply

Applications go through the Team Georgia Careers Workday portal. Several postings warn that they close at 12:00 a.m. on the listed closing date, so the final day is effectively the day before. Most of the postings say they are open to internal and external applicants, are unclassified positions, and require a reference check and a criminal background check where applicable. They also say DJJ prescreens every application, so applicants should list all relevant experience.

These openings are new postings only and do not show how many people the department will hire. The board also carried older entry-level juvenile correctional officer postings at the snapshot, including for the Marietta and Metro Atlanta RYDCs.
