Hiring
Two large employers posted driver and warehouse openings around Atlanta this week, with pay, schedules and screening requirements spelled out. Food distributor Performance Foodservice added CDL-A delivery driver postings in Forest Park on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and in Oakwood on Thursday, Oct. 29, along with a warehouse order selector job in Oakwood. Caterpillar posted a warehouse associate opening at its Atlanta Distribution Center on Oct. 29 with an application deadline of Wednesday, Nov. 4.
All figures below come from the employers’ own career sites, checked at about 20:30 UTC on Friday, Oct. 30. Postings are recruiting activity, not hires, and neither company says how many people it plans to bring on.
Performance Foodservice: drivers
A search of Performance Foodservice’s site for jobs in Atlanta returned 22 results, all tied to the location it calls Performance Atlanta (0705). They span Atlanta, Chamblee, Marietta, Peachtree City, Forest Park and Oakwood. Forest Park is in Clayton County and Marietta in Cobb County. Oakwood, where the company lists its yard, is in Hall County, northeast of Atlanta and outside the 29-county metro area.
The Forest Park CDL-A delivery driver posting (156597BR) and the Oakwood one (156737BR) both list pay starting at $90,000 a year. Dispatch is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays, between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., and drivers must work layover routes as needed. The jobs involve “touch freight,” meaning drivers unload product themselves, generally 10 to 35 pounds a case and up to roughly 60 to 90 pounds depending on location.
Both require a valid CDL-A, a high school diploma or GED, a minimum age of 21, a clean motor vehicle record for the past three years, a road test, a current or obtainable DOT health card, and a post-offer drug test and criminal background check. The experience bar differs: the Forest Park posting asks for at least 12 months of commercial driving, the Oakwood posting at least six. Similar CDL-A postings dated Oct. 20 in Atlanta and Oct. 26 in Marietta list the same $90,000 starting figure.
A CDL-A shuttle driver posting in Atlanta (156345BR), dated Tuesday, Oct. 27, lists minimum daily pay of $278.74 and requires a doubles endorsement plus one year of doubles experience. Its schedule is described two ways: Sunday-to-Friday dispatch between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in one section, and a third-shift Sunday-through-Thursday-night schedule, which “may vary,” in another.
Performance Foodservice: warehouse selectors
The full-time warehouse order selector posting in Oakwood (156688BR), dated Oct. 29, lists training pay of $19 an hour and says selectors can earn up to $36 an hour after training through production, quality and accuracy incentives. The shift runs Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. until the work is done.
Selectors pick cases from multi-level racks and move finished pallets with electric pallet jacks. Requirements include lifting 10 to 35 pounds regularly and up to roughly 60 to 100 pounds, working in dry, cooler and freezer areas, working required overtime, passing a drug test and background check, and earning pallet-jack certification during training. A part-time selector posting in Oakwood, dated Oct. 19, lists the same pay on a Friday-to-Monday afternoon schedule.
Caterpillar: Atlanta Distribution Center
Caterpillar’s requisition R0000402858 is a full-time, regular warehouse associate role in its Product Support and Logistics Division, located at 5350 Hunter Road, Atlanta. The posting was live at the time of the check.
Base pay is $20.60 an hour, paid weekly, with a $1.50 hourly premium on second and third shifts and an 11% premium on alternative-schedule shifts. A summary range on the posting reads $20.00 to $24.90. Overtime is paid at time and a half, and some may be mandatory. Benefits start on day one, with a 6% 401(k) match.
Applicants must be at least 18, have at least one year of current warehouse experience and at least one year of consecutive employment in previous roles, and be able to lift 50 pounds. Some associates may be trained on order pickers, reach trucks, forklifts and overhead cranes.
Five-day shifts start at 5 a.m., 1 p.m. or 9 p.m., and three-day schedules run roughly 12 hours a shift, such as Thursday through Saturday from 3 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Applicants take an online assessment, then a phone screen and interview, followed by background, drug and medical screening. Caterpillar warns that starting may involve “a sizable waiting period” until a slot opens on the requested shift.
