Georgia Power Posts $37.14-an-Hour Union Fleet Mechanic Track and Armed Security Jobs Among New Metro Atlanta Openings

Employers

Georgia Power is recruiting mechanics for a union fleet-maintenance development program that pays a posted $37.14 an hour, one of 32 Georgia job postings that Southern Company and its subsidiaries added from Monday, Nov. 2, through Thursday, Nov. 5. Twenty-two of those postings are for metro Atlanta locations: 18 in Atlanta, three in Forest Park and one at Plant McDonough.

The figures come from the Georgia job feed on southerncompany.jobs, Southern Company’s careers site, checked at about 02:45 UTC on Friday, Nov. 6 (late Thursday evening in Atlanta). The feed listed 78 Georgia postings in all. A posting is an opening the company is advertising, not a hire, and some jobs are listed more than once under different locations.

The fleet mechanic program

The Fleet Mechanic D/P postings went up Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Atlanta and Forest Park, along with Savannah, Cornelia and Macon. The posting lists Forest Park, Jefferson Street, Smyrna, Cornelia and Minola as work locations. It describes “a maximum 4-year apprenticeship program” for a qualified mechanic at a Georgia Power fleet service facility. How long a hire stays in the program depends on their existing skill with light- and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.

Pay is listed as $6,438 a month, or $37.14 an hour. The posting says the role “falls under a union contract and pay is non-negotiable.” The job is covered by International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 84, and the posting says membership is optional. Work locations are set by a statewide seniority process.

Applicants need one of three backgrounds. The first is a completed two-year vocational or technical program in automotive or diesel technology. The second is at least four years in a fleet maintenance shop or military wheeled-vehicle maintenance, and the posting lists the qualifying military specialties. The third is a mix of work experience and coursework totaling four years. ASE, welding and hydraulic certifications are a plus.

The bar to get in is high. Candidates must pass two pre-employment exams, the Construction and Skilled Trade Test (CAST) and a Physical Abilities Test. They must hold a Class A commercial driver’s license with air brakes and a DOT medical card, or a Class A learner’s permit and get the full license within six months of hire. The posting sets a body-weight limit of 280 pounds, fully dressed, for equipment safety. New hires must bring their own hand tools, including a top toolbox, and must live within an hour of the work location or relocate at their own expense. The job includes evening hours, storm duty and possible out-of-state travel, and requires working at heights to test aerial devices.

Line inspector and armed security

A Line Inspector posting based in Forest Park went up Wednesday, Nov. 4, for “multiple positions.” The inspectors monitor contract crews building Georgia Power transmission lines. The job requires a high school diploma and at least seven years of transmission line construction experience. The posting says the work involves statewide travel 85% of the time, storm duty, and no relocation assistance.

A Security Officer I posting for Plant McDonough on South Cobb Drive went up Monday, Nov. 2. It is an armed night-shift job, with 12-hour shifts from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. or 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., including mandatory holidays and weekends. Applicants must be at least 21. They must pass psychological, drug and firearms evaluations, qualify annually with a pistol and shotgun, and be able to get licensed through the Georgia Board of Private Detectives and Security Agencies. Three years of law enforcement, military or security experience is preferred, and the job requires a clean driving record for a company vehicle. No pay is listed for the line inspector or security postings.

The office side

Most of the other new metro postings are office and technical jobs in Atlanta. They include project managers and a cost analyst, data and billing analysts, an application developer, a mobile quality assurance analyst and a talent management consultant. A Southern Company Gas project-controls analyst job is based at that unit’s headquarters and requires four days a week on site.

Applications are taken through each posting on southerncompany.jobs. The postings reviewed did not list closing dates, so openings can come down once they are filled.
