Skilled Trades Gain Attention as Employers Confront Technical-Worker Shortages

Career Outlook

Major employers are putting renewed attention on skilled trades as infrastructure, manufacturing and maintenance needs collide with an aging workforce and new technology investment.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra recently highlighted careers such as electricians and automotive technicians, arguing that some can reach high five-figure or six-figure pay with experience. The larger career signal is that hands-on technical work remains essential even as AI adoption accelerates.

Workers should be cautious with headline salary figures. Pay varies sharply by trade, geography, union status, overtime, credential and experience. A better decision process is to identify a specific occupation, check local wage distributions and demand, then compare apprenticeship or training time with expected earnings.
