Medical-technology company BD says it will direct $3 billion toward expanding U.S. manufacturing as part of a broader $19 billion domestic investment commitment announced October 6.
The company said the larger commitment will span capital, operating and supply-chain investments over several years. The manufacturing portion is intended for strategic production sites around the country.
More domestic production
BD expects the program to add capacity for approximately 5 billion essential medical consumables a year and raise the share of those products it supplies domestically to roughly 80%. It also says 100% of BD needles used in the United States will be made domestically with American-made steel.
BD lists Covington, Georgia, among its existing U.S. manufacturing locations, along with sites in Nebraska, Connecticut, Puerto Rico, Utah, Texas and South Carolina. The announcement does not say how the $3 billion will be divided among those facilities, so no Georgia-specific jobs or investment total can yet be inferred.
What to watch
The labor-market question is where the new production capacity lands and what mix of manufacturing, engineering, maintenance and supply-chain roles follows. BD did not disclose an aggregate jobs target in the announcement.
