The Job Market Today
U.S. job openings were little changed at 7.3 million in July, while hires and total separations each held near 5.1 million, according to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey.
Quits were about 3.1 million and layoffs and discharges about 1.7 million. The combination describes a labor market with substantial open demand but relatively restrained worker movement. Openings measure positions employers are actively recruiting for under BLS definitions; they are not the same as hires actually completed.
For employers, the gap between openings and hires is a useful reminder that recruiting demand and recruiting outcomes are separate measures. For workers, a large openings total should not be read as a direct count of immediately attainable jobs in any one occupation or city.
The August JOLTS report is scheduled for September 29.
