Job Changers Still Held a Pay-Growth Advantage in August, ADP Data Shows

The Pay Report

Base pay for U.S. job changers increased 4.7% from a year earlier in August, compared with 3.0% for workers who stayed with their employer, according to ADP Pay Insights.

Across all private-sector workers in ADP’s data, base pay rose 3.2% and gross pay increased 4.7%. Gross pay includes additional earnings beyond base wages, so it should not be compared directly with a standard hourly-wage series.

The job-changer premium remains relevant for retention and recruiting, but it does not mean every worker who changes jobs receives that increase. ADP aggregates a large payroll dataset across industries, occupations and locations. Employers should compare role-specific market pay before using the national figures to set offers.
